U MP3 - This is a very short audio material file as an example of uke nembutsu
. (One may view uke nembutsu as an interjectional Nembutsu from the congregation. Or one may argue that uke nembutsu has the antiphonal and responsorial character in a way.)
In an episode related to "the Head of Genbei" of the Reverend Shonen Sobue's Fushidansekkyo, uke nembutsu erupts at a considerable number of places. From among them I have extracted only four places and put into one audio material. Although in contrast with uke nembutsu that you will hear in an actual place of sermon, the uke nembutsu in this additional audio material is all but changed into a small recorded sound, yet I hope that you will get the feel, even if only slightly, for what uke nembutsu is like.
The following is a part of Fushidansekkyo Material 1-a, the material distributed when I presented my paper at the meeting of Geino Gakkai [The Society of Performing Arts, The founder: Dr. Shinobu Orikuchi (d. 1953)] for reading research papers on the 4th of December, 1999.
Each green-colored Japanese word "
uke nembutsu" in parentheses indicates a place where voices of uke nembutsu are risen. And each ochre-colored Japanese word "
fushi" in parentheses indicates a place where a tune (a cadenced place in the reverend's preaching) starts.

The Name (Myogo
) is the manifestation of the Primal Vow of Tathagata, the Ki
[dormant nature or dormant being] of entrusting in Amida Buddha and the Dharma of saving all sentient beings. The Name is also the command of the summoning from Tathagata and the figure of Shinjin
[True Entrusting] that is open, having heard the command. "Tathagata is I. Yet I am not Tathagata. Tathagata becomes I and saves me." Shojun Bando perceives this Hogo [Dharma word] as that which penetrates the ultimate of the salvation by the Name. To see the "Name" in place of Fushidansekkyo will, however, at a point which subtly diverges from the absolutized "Na Mu A Mi Da Butsu
" under the pure doctrinal study, be to see the nonuniform figure and heart of "na mu a mi da butsu" of the people.
